Story

Hey ya'll,

I have decided to make a difference by taking part in The Color Run and raising money for charity.

After participating in the Mud Run last year I managed to raise $575, this year I have chosen the Colour Run as my first fundraising event and have chosen Haemochromatosis Australia as my benefit charity. This organisation is not very well known but little do most people know haemochromatosis is the most common genetic disorder in Australia. About 1 in 200 people of northern European origin have the genetic risk for haemochromatosis. People with haemochromatosis absorb too much iron from their diet. The excess iron is stored in the body. Over time this leads to iron overload.

We all know that not enough iron causes health problems but few realise that for some, too much iron is also a problem. If undetected and untreated, the excess iron can cause organ or tissue damage and can potentially result in premature death. Haemochromatosis tends to be under-diagnosed, partly because its symptoms are similar to those caused by a range of other illnesses.
The good news is that if haemochromatosis is detected before damage occurs, it can be easily treated and is no barrier to a happy and successful life. .

This charity is very personal to me as I suffer the exact opposite of what this charity raises awareness for and a close family friend suffers from this disorder so raising awareness and donations for Haemochromatosis Australia will help bring awareness where needed!
I would also really appreciate it if you could 'Like' and share my page above or comment below so more people know about it.

Click 'Donate Now' to make a secure online donation and help me reach my target. I would welcome any contribution, great or small, that you could make!

All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you will be issued with a DGR receipt via email as soon as you make a donation.

Thanks so much for your support!

Haemochromatosis Australia

Haemochromatosis Australia is the support, advocacy and health promotion group for people affected by haemochromatosis and their families.  We are run entirely by volunteers with no paid staff.

Our vision is that no Australian will suffer harm from haemochromatosis.

We aim to raise awareness of haemochromatosis in the community so that those people at risk are diagnosed and treated early. We participate in the annual International Haemochromatosis Week 1 - 7 June, and conduct awareness activities throughout the year.  We provide support and information through our website and social media channels, INFO LINE 1300 019028, print and electronic information products, public information sessions and other activities.

Haemochromatosis (inherited iron overload disorder) is the most common genetic disorder in Australia, affecting one in 200 people. If untreated, it can lead to serious, even fatal health complications. Yet is is easy to treat, and if diagnosed before harm occurs, people with haemochromatosis can look forward to a normal, healthy life.

We need your support to help us fund our informationa and support services and our camoaigns to raise awareness of the risks of inherited iron overload in the community.
